Do you dream of Barbados or Dubai but settle for Belfast or Dublin? Well you are not alone.

While taking a few weeks off for my holidays I noticed quite a few people posting on social media about their fear of flying and how this fear was causing not just them but also their families so much stress and anxiety.

So I thought I would post a short blog about how hypnotherapy can help people gain control over their fear.

Fear of flying according to research affects about 1 in 10 people. For people who do not suffer from anxiety this can seem in their eyes to be an irrational fear but to those who suffer from this phobia the fear will appear very real in their mind.

The subconscious mind’s primary function is to protect us so if something is perceived as a threat it will take action to reduce the anxiety and to keep us safe. The subconscious mind is warning you that it’s dangerous to get on a plane.   This would be appropriate if the plane was missing a wing or obviously not in a condition to fly.  However, in the case of a flying phobia, that protection mechanism which is meant to keep you safe has become over-sensitive and is now a problem.

Even though there is an abundance of data and statistics that prove flying is a safer way to travel than say crossing the road those who suffer from this phobia are gripped by the fear.

When people hear about fear of flying most people tend to think of it affecting only the summer holiday abroad with the family. While the fear may cause a person to miss the family holiday it can also affect other areas of their lives such as their work or family events.

The reason for being afraid will vary from person to person as will the amount of anxiety and distress it causes which can range from mild distress right up to a state of panic. This distress will start at different stages for people with some experiencing the fear when booking the flight to the day of the flight and travelling to the airport.

Common physical symptoms of this fear include

  • Racing heartbeat
  • Nausea
  • Sweating
  • Panic attacks

How does Hypnotherapy help you overcome your fear?

One of the keys to overcoming your fear is relaxation.  Hypnotherapy will teach you relaxation skills that can become automatic when practiced and perfected.

Hypnotherapy can help you to learn a new pattern of behaviour.

Hypnosis uses relaxation techniques and the power of suggestion to promote a positive change. In the past, you used to dread flying or even boarding a plane – in the future you can simply relax and start to enjoy the freedom of flying.

If you would like to be able to dream of where your next flight will take you then please get in touch with me and let me help you take back control of your fear.
